Fashion Studio Part 2

This summer I began reading chapter books with my 5 year old. Our usual choices include books around a third grade reading level which include one or more picture per chapter. These criteria make the book easier for Lilly to understand while listening to the words. During a recent visit to the library I stumbled upon a different book 1oo Dresses: If The Magic Fits. Although it does not meet the criteria for our read aloud choices, I thought the premise of magic dresses might intrigue my fashion loving daughter, so we gave it a try. We are only part of the way through the story but couldn’t resist the inspiration to connect this book to our current fashion studio project.

Yellow Dress

One of the dresses in the book is described as “sunshine yellow” with “a garden of ribbon flowers.” Based on this description Lilly colored a dress in her design book. She chose to add some of her own details including a blue belt and green top. Next, we set about creating a girl sized version of the dress. This time we used plastic bags: 1 bag with the bottom cut off for the top, 3 bags taped together became a skirt. To get a green color we taped blue tissue paper inside to yellow plastic bag serving as the dress’s top. Blue tissue paper created a belt, cupcake liners were glued on to create flowers, and construction paper created extra details.

Then we headed outside for some modeling time:

What kind of fashion will we be inspired to create next?
