Eggs and Grasshoppers (Chicken Update)

Awesome surprise this week, we found our first eggs!

Two of our Road Island Red hens are now egg laying age and the others shouldn’t be too far behind. Over the following few days we gathered 4 more small eggs. The hens still have some growing to do before we will be getting a regular supply of large eggs, but it’s very exciting to get these first small eggs knowing our hens are reaching maturity.

Grasshopper Hunting

Did you know chickens love to catch and eat bugs? Of course they do. We have noticed our chickens going crazy whenever a grasshopper, which we have had a lot of this year, goes flying through while they are out free ranging. Over the long weekend we decided to collect some special treats for our chickens. We spent a nice afternoon out grasshopper hunting and caught 5 grasshoppers. It was a wonderful chance for some outdoor exercise during beautiful weather, some scientific observation of a fascinating insect, and a delicious treat for our birds.
